Io Volcanism - WYOMING WORKSHOP
Aug. 9 -11, 2004
Organisor: R. Howell (U. of Wyoming)
AGENDA/SCHEDULE
9:00 Bob Howell: Information on Field Station and Field Trip plans
9:15 – 15:00 (With break for lunch)
Summary of current research projects/results
1) TEMPERATURES ON/IN IO
Windy Jaeger: Constraining Io’s internal temperature by structural stability
Laszlo Keszthelyi: Superheating of lavas
Tracy Gregg: Lava lakes
Bob Howell: Temperature regulation at Loki (short update)
2) MAPPING / STRUCTURE / TECTONICS
Dave Williams: Geologic mapping plans, Zamama-Thor regional map, global mapping
proposal
Flora Paganelli: Tohil Mons
Windy Jaeger: The Wind River thrust as a possible analog for Io tectonics
Rosaly Lopes: Global distribution of hotspots (update on LPSC 2004 talk)
Jani Radebaugh: Querying the patera/hotspot/mountain database
3) GASSES/ATMOSPHERES/PLUMES
Bruce Fegley: Carbon compounds in Io gasses, plus S-O-Cl compounds in low T
gasses
Sue Kieffer: Planned collaborative work with D. Goldstein (on atmosphere/plumes?)
John Spencer: Large longitudinal asymmetries in Io's atmosphere
4) CONTINUED IO MONITORING
Franck Marchis (2 PM Telecon) Ongoing ground-based monitoring, May 2004 activity.
5) BRIEF UPDATE ON WORK BY THOSE NOT GIVING LONGER PRESENTATIONS15:00 Brief
attempt to plan discussion of following topics which participants have said
they want to see addressed. I expect we can cover one of these in the remaining
time on Monday, and the rest on Tuesday, ending with some version of #5.
1) Temperature sensing and possible buffering role of volatiles.
2) Sulfur volcanism: Which do we think are sulfur? Why? Is there a consensus?
3) Lava lakes
4) Abundances of “trace” constituents:
Are C compounds realistic?
What are limits on ice/gas abundances derived from spectroscopy.
How much H2O could be present. Where do accreted protons go?
5) Relationship of tectonics, mountains, and Io volcanism. Structural control
of landslides
6) Future work:
a) What are our immediate research plans.
b) Are people moving away from Io research now that Galileo is over?
If so, what big questions do we need to address before other missions absorb
our attention.
c) What publications are planned.
d) Plans for a “next” Io workshop?
