In the meantime, here are a couple of messages from Jay Goguen, concerning the upcoming San Juan Capistrano Io meeting, and Saturnian satellite mutual events. Best wishes, John. Lowell Observatory 1993/06/07 ************************************************************************** SOLICITING YOUR INPUTS TO AN OVERVIEW OF IO OBSERVING PLANS FOR GALILEO SUPPORT Jay Goguen, Satellites Discipline Near the beginning of the Io Conference (San Juan Institute, 21-25 June 1993) invited talks summarizing the planned Galileo Mission observations of Io and instrumental capabilities will be presented. These speakers are also charged with identifying desirable groundbased observations that would support the Galileo observations. Meeting participants are encouraged to discuss with the Galileo representatives ideas for observations either from the ground or from the spacecraft that would enhance the overall science return from the total data set during this unique period of intensive study of Io. Many of the important decisions regarding Galileo Mission observations will be made this year. A Jupiter Watch Initiative within the Planetary Astronomy Program may also start in FY95. The purpose of these presentations and discussions is to foster synergisitc interactions between the Galileo Project representatives, instrument team members, groundbased observers, HST observers, and the Io scientific community in general. Prior to and during the meeting, participants are encouraged to communicate a summary of their discussions and Io observing plans to me (Nick Schneider will collect atmosphere and torus contributions) for an overview presentation in a session at the end of the conference on Fiday morning. From your inputs, a picture of the overall groundbased Galileo supporting observations of Io should emerge. Some suggested topics to be considered include: Are there types of observations that are missing that should be planned? What temporal sampling is optimum/practical? Have new ideas for Galileo measurements been identified that the participants recognize as a high priority? What important science questions are not optimally addressed by the planned observations and how could this situation be improved? This kind of synthesis and analysis of the ideas and plans of the broad and diverse community of independent Io researchers is essential to optimize the scientific value of the Galileo/Jupiter Watch data set. Actively participate. An open discussion will follow. To make this real-time workshop aspect of the Io Conference work, I am soliciting YOUR inputs. Do you have plans or ideas for Io observations that may be relevant to Galileo science? All I need is a brief description to include in the overview so that we can formulate the big picture. To get the ball rolling, here is a sample contribution from me: Responsible Person(s): Jay Goguen and JPL Colleagues Type of Observations Proposed: Regular (Daily-Weekly) IR Observations of Io's Thermal Emission spanning the 3-20 Micron Spectral Region Objectives: To construct a detailed temporal and spectral history of Io's global hot spot thermal emission during the period preceeding and including the Galileo mission. Please e-mail your inputs on your plans or suggestions of observations that you think should be made to me in advance of the meeting, or convey them to me at the meeting. Your participation is essential if these workshop sessions are to be a success. See you at San Juan Capistrano.
