It describes Galileo's plans for imaging of Io prior to the close Io encounter which occurs at 17:47 UT on December 7th 1995. Nine-image On-Chip Mosaics (OCMs) of Io (8 filters plus an extra long-exp violet) will be acquired during approach to Io at about: (date, hr:min) S/C lon phase res (km/px) plumes ============================================================ 12/5/95 21:45 242 80 23 Prometheus-br limb 12/6/95 04:45 300 78 24 Marduk--br limb 12/6/95 18:45 33 53 19 Loki-br limb; Masubi-term These are the only distant SSI observations of Io in J0; times are SCET [spacecraft event time] (UTC). "Simultaneous" observations from the ground would have to be 52 minutes later to allow for light-time. As a reminder, here's the bad news- solar elongation of Jupiter around the Jupiter encounter: --------------------------------- Date (UT) Solar Elongation --------------------------------- 1995/11/01.0 37.9 1995/11/15.0 26.8 1995/12/01.0 14.1 1995/12/05.0 11.0 1995/12/06.0 10.2 1995/12/07.0 9.4 1995/12/08.0 8.6 (Io/Jupiter encounter) 1995/12/09.0 7.8 1995/12/10.0 7.0 1995/12/15.0 3.1 1995/12/19.0 0.3 (conjunction) 1996/01/01.0 10.4 1996/01/15.0 21.5 1996/01/29.0 32.7 ----------------------------------
