From spencer@lowell.edu Tue Oct 3 11:33:47 1995 From spencer@lowell.edu Tue Oct 3 11:33:47 1995 From: spencer@lowell.edu (John R. Spencer) Date: Tue, 3 Oct 1995 11:27:55 -0700 To: oleroemer@lowell.edu Subject: DPS IJW Satellite Meeting Cc: spencer@lowell.edu Content-Length: 2629 X-Lines: 64 Status: RO Greetings: As mentioned before, we'll have the annual meeting of the International Jupiter Watch Satellite Discipline on Friday October 13th, the last day of DPS, in the Director's Room at the Ritz-Carlton, from noon till 1:30pm. This is not to be confused with the day-long Io workshop organised by Rosaly Lopes and others, to be held on Sunday 8th October. TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION: 1) Leadership: I'm happy to continue as discipline leader but in the spirit of democracy, if anyone else is interested in the job we can hold an election. 2) Future Io Conference: Sometime after the Galileo data are returned it will be useful to have another Io meeting to discuss the results and how they relate to ground-based observations and other Io studies. One possibility is to hold a 3-day workshop at Lowell Observatory in mid-October 1996, immediately before the Tucson DPS meeting, but I'm open to alternative suggestions. 3) Status of groundbased Io monitoring in 1995, and possible improvements for the Galileo tour. I think this has been the best year ever for groundbased Io monitoring- we've achieved good time and wavelength coverage and have seen some interesting activity. Monitoring will be even more important during the Galileo tour: can we do even better? 4) The next mutual event season: what's the status of predictions for 1996-1997 Galilean satellite mutual eclipses and occultations, and how can we best make use of these opportunities? 5) This will be a good forum to present informally any recent observational results on the Galilean satellites that you won't be discussing during the Sunday Io workshop, or the regular DPS sessions. WHAT I WOULD LIKE FROM YOU: 1) Let me know if you plan to attend the DPS IJW Satellites meeting. Space is limited so if we have overwhelming interest we might want to look for a larger room. 2) Let me know if you are interested in this job, or if you have suggestions as to how I could do it better. 3) Send me your opinions on an Io workshop at Lowell in October 1996, or possible alternatives. 4) If you have been doing volcano monitoring in 1995, please send me a list of the dates on which you obtained useful information on the volcanic activity, the planned dates of future observations, and a brief summary of your results. It will be useful to plot everyone's observations on a timeline to help identify how we could improve the monitoring next year. 5) Let me know if you'd like to give an informal presentation of your recent Galilean satellite results. 6) Let me know if you have anything else you'd like to discuss at the meeting. Thanks! John.
