Greetings:

   Here's a press release just issued by the Galileo project describing
the latest news on the tape recorder problem.  The good news is that
the tape recorder appears to be working and can be used during the
Jupiter tour with minimal loss of data compared to expectations.
The bad news (very bad news!) is that in order to be sure of recording
the probe data properly, no data will be taken during the 1000-km
altitude Io flyby in December.  Later approaches to Io will be no
closer than about 300,000 km, unless the project decides to attempt
a risky return to Io late in the mission.
