Lou Frank tells me that it's *likely* that fields and particles observations will be taken during both the inbound and outbound passes through the Io plasma torus. Specifically, all fields and particles instruments (dust, plasma wave, plasma, and magnetic field) will probably be recording from 7.8 Rj to 5.4 Rj on the inbound leg, which includes the 1000-km Io flyby, and most F+P instruments (dust, magnetic field, plasma wave, high-energy plasma) will record from 4.3 Rj to 6.4 Rj on the outbound leg. There's also a small chance of a single hi-res infrared radiometer (PPR) scan across Io during closest approach, but no other remote sensing observations of Io are planned. The data will be recorded on the tape recorder at the same low rate used for the probe data. However, the final decision hasn't yet been made on whether any of these observations will be done. John.
