From JPL via Rosaly Lopes-Gautier, here's a list of the times and distances of Galileo's closest approaches to the Jovian satellites on the first "G1" orbit. These are revised to include the 1-week advance in the time of the G1 perijove. Observations aren't necessarily planned for the times given. These distances are from the center of the body, so as Ganymede's radius is 2630 km, the flyby is 848 km above the surface. Note also the relatively close (156,000 km) Europa encounter, a bit closer than the 200,000 km Voyager 2 flyby. An image of Europa's north pole is planned during this encounter, which will be the best Europa image yet taken, though far worse than what will be obtained on subsequent orbits. Times listed are in ET (Ephemeris time); subtract 62.184 sec to get the UTC time. Times are at the spacecraft: add 35 minutes lighttime to get Earth received time. Some of these observations may not actually be done. Groundbased spectroscopy, or radiometry of the volcanos (especially at wavelengths longer than 5 microns), would be useful for interpretation of the NIMS data.
