THE THREE GALILEOS: THE MAN, THE SPACECRAFT, THE TELESCOPE file announc.txt rev. 10 Oct. 1996 ANNOUNCEMENT We are pleased to announce the Conference: ``The Three GALILEOs: the Man, the Spacecraft, the Telescope'' to be held in Padova, from Tuesday January 7, through Friday, January 10, 1997. The meeting is organized by the University of Padova, the Astronomical Observatory of Padova, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL, the Deutsche Agentur Fur Raumfahrt - Angelegenheiten DARA, and with the support of IAU. TOPICAL RANGE: The conference will describe: - the days of Galileo Galilei in Padova from the 7th to the 14th of January 1610, when he discovered from his house in Padova the four medicean moons of Jupiter; - the main results of the NASA Galileo Spacecraft; - the just completed Italian 3.5m National Telescope Galileo (TNG). LOCATION: The meeting will be held in Padova in the Aula Magna of the University (Palazzo del Bo). FORMAT OF THE CONFERENCE: 36 invited talks plus about 80 posters plus Round Table discussion on the ``Exploration of the Solar System''. See the attached program. ANTICIPATED NUMBER OF ATTENDEES: we are compelled to restrict the partecipation to about 150 persons, in addition to the invited speakers and chairmen. About 80 posters will be accepted. The attendees and the posters will be selected by the scientific committee on the basis of their relevance with the conference topics. REGISTRATION: You must submit your intention to attend the Conference by sending your application (see attached) only via fax to Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG): +39-49-8754345, before October 31th. Selected partecipants will receive a formal invitation to attend the conference and all other useful information (i.e. poster abstracts submission, hotel reservation, transportation from the airport, social events etc.) before November 11th. The registration fee is US$200 (italian lire 300.000), covering the coffees, the Proceedings (published by Kluwer) and some of the social activities. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE: none. CALL FOR PAPERS: it is planned to publish the invited talks and the accepted and refereed papers on a special book printed by Kluwer. Abstracts of invited talks and accepted papers will be printend and distributed at the meeting. Other details will be on the formal invitation. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: several interesting activities, including a "galileian dinner" will be organized and offered to the registered participants. A nominal fee will apply for non-registered accompanying guests.
